about

'Cava' + 'Jagged Roots' - two tracks of neck snapping hip hop beats - is Ivy Lab's first release of 2020, a year that sees their 2020 LDN label enter its fifth term of operation at the forefront of electronic music.

“ I guess you could say we’re increasingly veering away from the ’Talking-glitchy-basslines over halftime modified boombap beats’ model….. We’re feeling a greater freedom to both produce and DJ a wider span of aethetics and BPM's than ever before.”
- Ivy Lab

North London outfit Ivy Lab were brought together out of a shared enthusiasm for experimentations on the fringes of the UK bass music scene. The duo of Sabre (Gove Kidao) and Stray (J. Fogel), released their acclaimed debut album ‘Death Don’t Always Taste Good’ in 2018 (“A sound that finds a middle ground between drum & bass, dubstep, hip-hop and techno, powered by colossal sound design” Resident Advisor), produced one of BBC Radio 1’s top five Essential Mixes of the year, played worldwide from London to Tokyo to Berlin to New York, and continued to build the 20/20 LDN stable.

During 2019 Ivy Lab produced a solid output of innovative music. The warped beats and distorted sound effects of 'Gunk' featured ferocious verses by hyped LA rapper IceColdBishop in March, July's 'Stars' EP with Barclay Crenshaw (AKA Claude VonStroke) saw a more soulful side to their sound, two tracks - 'Orange' and 'Hotline' - were released from a fruitful collaboration with Two Fingers (Amon Tobin), and closing the year 'Space War' EP saw Ivy Lab explore myriad energies from the aggressive to the transcendent to the fantastical, with guest British Alt-rap veteran Onoe Caponoe and his on-the-rise affiliate L-Zee Roselli team up to deliver biting verses over the already fearsome title track. With 20/20 LDN into its fifth year in 2020, Ivy Lab continue to progress their sound ahead of the scene they helped to create.
